Matsumoto Shisui 松本桜水 was born in Tochigi Prefecture. He went to Tokyo to study painting. First he was a pupil of Kawai Gyokudô (1873-1957), who in his turn had been a pupil of Kôno Bairei. After this period of studying Japanese-style painting, he studied Western-style painting with Kuroda Seiki (1866-1924).
He was a regular exhibitor with the Nitten. His paintings show considerable Western influence. See Roberts, p. 105.
