Description
Engei shashin jô 演芸写真帖, "Photo kabuki magazine" The October 1925 issue of this magazine for kabuki lovers. On the cover a lithograph by Kawase Hasui, showing Matsumoto Kôshiro VII as Kongômaru. Inside another lithograph by Kobayakawa Kiyoshi is missing, but there is one by Itô Shinsui (see detail 1). In addition there are 7 pages with colour photographs, and 19 pages with b/w photographs, giving an amazing overview of the kabuki world of 1925. Illustrated in Seven Masters, 20th-century woodblock prints from the Wells collection, p. 155.
Condition
The cover printed with a silver background - the rest of the magazine shows signs of having been read very often: the four holes right show that it was bound together with other issues at one point. So not in perfect condition, but very collectible.
