Nagatochi Hideta 永地秀太 was born in Yamaguchi prefecture in 1873. He studied western style painting under Honda Kinkichiro and Matsuoka Hisashi and helped establish the Taihei Western Art Association in 1902. He participated in several Bunted exhibitions and received awards so he got a scolarship to study in Europe and went to France for a few years. The French government awarded him the prestigeous Légion d'Honneur in 1924.
