Kawanishi Yûzaburô (1923-2014)

The son of Kawanishi Hide, Kawanishi Yûzaburô was born in Kobe in 1923. Already in 1942 he exhibited with the Nihon Hanga Kyôkai, though he did not become a full-time printmaker: he graduated from the economics department of Kansai Gakuin in 1947. Subsequently he developed a style closely resembling that of his father. Its main characteristics are the use of bright colours and the absence of keyblock lines.
He received the Kobe City Prize of Culture in '85 and the Hyogo Prefecture Prize of Culture in 1995 . In 2002 he became an honorary member of the Japan Print Association. He exhibited at the Pistoia Print Biennale in 1968. His work is in the collections of the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, the National Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto, and the National Museum of Art, Osaka.
