Fukuda Bisen (1875-1963)

Fukuda Bisen was born in Hyôgo prefecture. When he was 16 years old he went to Tokyô. He became a pupil of Kubota Beisen and Hashimoto Gahô. His first exhibition was already in 1900. In 1900 he went to China, in order to study Chinese painting; later he also travelled to Korea. He specialized as a landscape painter. Among other commissions he made screens for two Kyôto temples, the Daikaku-ji and the Jingo-ji. After the war he retired to Ashiya, near Kyôto, where he led a secluded life until his death. In Japan he is highly rated as an artist.
