Kajiyama Toshio was born in Kameido, Tokyo, in 1935. In 1963 he wandered around Europe, and on his return he continued his artistic career. His first illustrated book dates from 1967, and from then on he has made (or contributed to) very many picture books, both for children and for adults. He has won many Japanese and international awards. His work also comprises paintings, watercolours and woodblock prints.
