Description山形の山寺 Yamagata no yamadera. Reduction woodblock print from the series Famous views of Japan (Nihon meisho zu-e 日本名所図絵). Numbered 29 out of an edition of 40. The reduction woodblock print technique is different from the traditional methods as the same block is used for every stage of the printing process. Each step involves re-carving the block, ensuring that the finished prints cannot be reproduced, as the block is destroyed during the process. Note: a traditional woodblock print on the same subject has been done in 2005 in a limited edition of 100 copies.
