Carver/printer ? / Igami Bonkotsu
Description Uomi (魚見) - Fish lookout Paper size: 17.2 x 15.2 cm. Minami Kunzô printed this design in 1912, but at the same time the blocks were recut by Igami Bonkotsu (1875-1933), the leading ukiyo-e carver around the turn of the century to introduce this print in "Bijutsu Shinpo" (Art News) in Vol.11, No.3 (issued Jan.1912). As Minami Kunzo's prints are extremely rare, the print offered here is the recarved (but also 1912) version.
Condition Fine impression and colours, very good condition: still attached to the original supporting sheet of moss-green paper (see detail1). For a copy of the sheet that Minami Kunzô printed see Nishiyama Junko, "Nihon no hanga", Vol.II Chiba City Art Museum 1999, ill. 4.
