Description Nine-tailed fox Paper size: 22 x 30 cm. Number 10 from the series Kaiju Manga ( Pictures of Magical Animals), printed in an edition of 30 in March 2012.
Condition Fine impression, colours and condition. Artist's note: "In Japanese folklore the fox spirit, or kitsune, gains supernatural omniscience on reaching the age of 100, as its fur changes from red through to gold and it gains its ninth tail. The kitsune is able to present as a beautiful woman and to live with a man who may not realise he is possessed by supernatural beauty. Shape shifting and the appropriation of beauty is seen in the development of manga art where early American cartoon faces were adapted with intense emotions projected through window pane eyes set into a bubble shaped head. This infantalised depiction of beauty is represented here by Hello Kitty, the iconic mascot of maturing adolescent cuteness. The template for this form of beauty was provided in 1955 by Dutchman Dick Bruna when he created his first children's book with Miffy the rabbit. Bruna has had some late success defending his copyright against foxy mimicry.
