Nishiyama Suishô 西山 翠嶂 was Kyôto born and bred. First he was one of Takeuchi Seihô's pupils, and in 1915 he married his daughter. During his career he became one of the most important figures in the Kyôto art world, a.o. Head of the Kyôto College of Fine Arts, where he taught Dômoto Inshô (1891-1975) and Yanagida Kako a.o.. He was also a member of the Imperial Art Academy and of the Art Committee for the Imperial Household. In 1957 he received the Order of Cultural Merit.
