Shimojima Toru was born in Takayama City (Gifu prefecture) in 1947. From 1973 on he studied oil-painting, architectural design and printmaking; as far as printmaking is concerned he is self-taught. In 1985 he went to France to study. His favourites were Giacometti and Cézanne. In 1986 he had his first independent solo art exhibition.
