Born in Osaka in 1987, he became apprentice to Asaka Motoharu (born in 1951), a traditionnal carver in 2010. In 2011 he worked and studied as a printer in the workshop of Matsuzaki Keizaburo (born 1937) who had previously worked for Watanabe publisher. In 2017 Shimoi began working as an independent artist specializing in high quality Ukiyoe reproductions and started with his own Shin hanga style works in 2024.
