Shima Seien 島成園 was born in Osaka, the daughter of the painter Shima Eikichi. She studied Japanese-style painting with Kitano Tsunetomi. Already at age 21 she exhibited with the Bunten. She mainly made bijin-ga, both paintings and woodblock prints, and she remained active until the year of her death.
