Sawada Tetsurô was born in Hokkaidô, in 1933, and he studied (Western) oil painting and graduated from the Musashino Art University in Tokyo. In 1960 he began abstract paintings, and in 1973 started making lithographs and serigraphs. He is sometimes referred to as "the skyscape artist", and his work has become very popular both in Japan and abroad.
