Satô Chôzan was born on 18 August 1888. He started studying sculpture in Tokyô in 1906, and set up a studio in Omori after his graduation. In 1922 he went to France to widen his horizon. In 1935 he became a member of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts. His studio burned down in 1945. He is known to have trained Yokata Shichirô (b. 1906), who later became a woodblock print artist.
