Saitô Kaoru was born in Kanagawa Prefecture in 1931. He studied Fine Art under Tsuruta Gorô and Arai Tatsuo from 1948-1950. He became a member of the Shunyo-kai and he is mainly known for his mezzotints. He has had countless exhibitions, and he is generally considered one of Japan's finest mezzotint artists. In the last part of his life he lived in Hayama, also in Kanagawa.
