Born in Kyoto, Isoda Mataichirô studied painting at the Kyoto City Specialist School of Painting. After graduating there he studied Japanese-style painting with Kikuchi Keigetsu. Though primarily a painter he also made a number of woodblock designs for Unsôdô in Kyôto.
