Aiwa Katsushi was born in Kyoto. He first learned textile dyeing. In 1979 he started in that profession, and in 1983 he entered the workshop of Idō Masao, who is primarily known as a woodblock print artist, but who was also know as a textile artist. He is known to have worked in Idō Masao's studio at least until 1991.
