Biography Toyokuni, Utagawa (1769 - 1825)

Utagawa Toyokuni is undoubtedly one of the most important artists of 18th century ukiyo-e. In the beginning of his career he excelled with bijin (beautiful women) prints, in the 1790s he was one of the best designers of actor prints. Unfortunately his work deteriorated in the last 10, 15 years of his life: it became repetitive, coarse and uninspired.
He was the teacher of two of the most important 19th century print artists, Utagawa Kunisada (later known as Toyokuni III) and Utagawa Kuniyoshi, who in his turn was the teacher of the best late 19th century print artist, Tsukioka Yoshitoshi.
Toyokuni, Kuniyoshi and Yoshitoshi thus span 100 years of ukiyo-e history.
