Biography Yoshida, Hiroshi (1876 - 1950)

Hiroshi Yoshida was already an established painter (oils & watercolours), who had travelled extensively, when he tried his hands at woodblock prints. His first seven prints were published by Watanabe Shzabur, but everything was lost in the 1923 earthquake. Returning from the USA Hiroshi Yoshida set up his own workshop, and for the rest of his life he produced and sold his prints himself. Hiroshi Yoshida was a meticulous and conscientious artist, who created an impressive an varied oeuvre. It is important to note that his prints bearing the jizuri (self-printed) seal are more expensive than the ones without it, since Yoshida supervised and approved of the printing himself. Several of his families (his son Toshi a.o.) became woodblock print artists as well.
