Biography Sadanobu III, Hasegawa (1881 - 1963)
Hasegawa Sadanobu III was born in an old family of Ukiyo-e artists.
He was trained by his father and grandfather. His grandfather came from Osaka. He was a pupil of Shijo painter Ueda Kocho and later became a pupil of Utagawa Sadamasu, thus becoming a member of the Osaka school. The subjects of Hasegawa Sadanobu III include Kabuki actors and scenes, scenes from Bunraku (the traditional puppet show), bijin, genre prints and scenes from Japanese history. Most of his work was commissioned by the Uchida company in Kyoto, which at that time was one of the largest publishers of woodcuts in Japan. His son (born 1914, active till the 1980s) has followed in the family tradition as Hasegawa Sadanobu IV. He has achieved a fusion of tradition and modernism.
