Biography Shûseki, Okutani 秋石 奥谷 (1871 - 1936)

Okutani Shūseki was born in Osaka in 1871. The fact that the Mori family originated from Osaka may have helped him being accepted into the Mori studio, where he studied under Mori Kansai with Yamamoto Shunkyo and others.
Like all painters of the Mori family school, his paintings of animals are remarkable for their unsentimental naturalism, showing his keen interest in the essence of animal beings.
He lived in Kyoto most of his life.
