Biography Nahiko, Katori 魚彦 楫取 (1723 - 1782)

Katori Nahiko was born in Katori in Shimōsa province. He was a pupil of Kumashiro Yūhi and Tatebe Ryōtai. He studied classics under Kamo no Mabuchi and excelled in haikai.Next to this he was a famous scholar, a philologist, author of Kogentei, a guide how to read ancient texts, published in 1765. He belonged to a group of scholars, to which also belonged Arikada Hisaoyu (1746-1804) and Motoori Norinaga (1730-1801).
His painting style is characterised by its free and off-hand manner. Recurring themes are plum blossoms and carp.
His best known pupil is Kubo Shumman. He is buried in the grounds of Kanpuku-ji in Sawara (Chiba).
