Yasukuni Jinja - Mitama Matsuri (靖国神社「みたままつり」) - Yasukuni Shrine - Mitama Festival Paper size: 62.8 x 44.6 cm. Number 22 from an edition of 100, self-printed in 1993. Print details in pencil. Two impressed stamps, one reading "Japan Print Association" and one "Original Mezzotint Nobuo Satoh". This print is #47 of the series of 100 prints, 100 New Views of Tokyo, a Message to the 21st Century, initiated by the Japanese Print Society in 1990, and realized in 10 boxes of 10 prints each. In the West the Yasukuni Shrine is highly controversial as also convicted war criminals are remembered there.
Condition
Fine impression, colours and condition. The Yasukuni Shrine is dedicated to those who died on behalf of the Empire of Japan. It lists the names of over 2,466,000 enshrined men, women and children. During the Obon Festival 30,000 lanterns light the way to the shine every evening. We see the ghostly figures of killed soldiers in the foreground.
