Minami, Kunzō (1883 - 1950)

Uomi (魚見) - Fish lookout
Paper size: 17.6 x 15.2 cm. Minami Kunzō printed this design in 1911, but around the same time the blocks were recut by Igami Bonkotsu (1875-1933), the leading ukiyo-e carver around the turn of the century, to introduce this print in "Bijutsu Shinpo" (Art News) in Vol.11, No.3 (issued Jan.1912). Minami Kunzō's prints are extremely rare, and the print offered here is the re-carved (but also 1912) version.

Euro SOLD

Fine impression and colours (see also detail 1), very good condition: still attached to the original supporting sheet of moss-green paper. For a copy of the sheet that Minami Kunzō printed see Nishiyama Junko, "Nihon no hanga", Vol. II, Chiba City Art Museum 1999, ill. 4.
