Hiratsuka, Un'ichi (1895 - 1997)
Full Moon on the fifteenth Night
Paper size: 69.5 x 61 cm, self-printed in 1957; Red seal reading "Hiratsuka Un'ichi" bottom right.
One of Hiratsuka's most famous designs, printed on a slightly irregular piece of heavy, watermarked paper. In this instance Hiratsuka used a piece of paper about the same size as the block, so the prints is NOT trimmed. The edition is supposed to number 30, but it is not at all sure if the edition was ever completed.
Fine impression and condition: with these large, jet-black designs Hiratsuka repeatedly inked the block, keeping about half the paper firmly on the block with one hand while inking the other half of the block. The result is that the paper is deeply saturated.
Illustrated regularly, a.o. in Hiratsuka, Modern Master, plate 52, and on the back cover.
