Wada, Sanz˘ (1883 - 1968)
Nijűbashi (二重橋) Double bridge at the imperial palace
Paper size: 92.5 x 56 cm. Published by Kyoto Hanga-in 1943. Signed in yellow ink, plus artist's seal.
This type of giant woodblock print (some 4 to 6 designs are known) were meant as showpieces for the publisher, and were exhibited in a few large department stores, like Mitsukoshi and Matsuzakaya. Only a few were printed, enough for the shopwindows, and they were framed by the publisher for that purpose.
Fine impression, very good colours, fairly good to good condition: This print was framed before the time of archival framing and that shows: there is a matline, and there are also insect marks (see "detail"). On the other hand this very large print is very, very rare, and you are unlikely ever to find another copy!Nishiyama Junko, Nihon no hanga, Chiba City Art Museum 2008, vol. V: What Japanese prints mean 1941-1950, plate 64.
