Kunichika, Toyohara (1835 - 1900)

Ichikawa Danjurô IX in the role of Endô Moritô, standing on the steps of theJigan Temple with the severed head of his beloved Kesa-gozen. Originally published by Fukuda Kumajirô in 1896.

Euro SOLD

Very good impression and colours, good condition: loose, unbacked sheets; some discolouration, though not as strong as shown in the scan - see "detail" for a photograph.

It is very interesting to compare this diptych with the one shown in the book Heroes of the Kabuki Stage (p.321): only the centre sheets match, but the left and right sheets are different. The triptych offered by me is dated 1899 (Meiji 22), and also the publisher is different.
