Literature:This is a very large preparatory drawing, very characteristic of Kuniyoshi's drawing style. We see a samurai warrior with a standard (sashimono), topped by a family crest, on his back. The family crest (a broad ring) may be that of Katô Kiyomasa (1562-1611). The spear in his hands points at two kowtowing persons.
Cp. with Elena Varshavskaya's Heroes of the grand pacification p. 73 for a print showing a warrior in a similar stance.
