Literature:This hanshita-e may very well be part of a series of preparatory drawings for triptychs, as shown in a recent Japanese publication of the Nagoya City Museum, Utagawa Kunisada: Ozaki Kyuya ukiyoe korekushon - exhibition of ukiyo-e prints by Kunisada from the collection of Ozaki Kyuya. These triptychs show a kind of "Rake's Progress", the drunken and scandalous adventures of a young man, ending in a forced marriage, as shown in this drawing.
