Biography Kôgyo, Tsukioka (1869 - 1927)

Tsukioka Kôgyo was 23 when his stepfather, Tsukioka Yoshitoshi died. Though he had studied with him his style and subject-matter were quite different. Yoshitoshi had studied Noh chanting, and that may have been the stimulus for Kôgyo's lifelong fascination with the Noh Theatre. The last 30 years of his life he made many series of Noh prints, the most important of which is no doubt the series Nogaku hyakuban, which was partly published before and partly after the great earthquake of 1923. He also made kacho-e. Apart from being a print-maker he was also an accomplished and inspired painter, of both Noh and nature subjects.
