Biography Watanabe, Seitei (1851 - 1918)

Seitei Watanabe was born in Edo (Tokyo), and without any doubt he was the best birds-and-flowers painter of his age. He was a consummate draughtsman and next to making numerous paintings, he was also a prolific designer of woodblock prints, many of which in the shikishiban format. He was also the originator and editor-in-chief of Bijutsu Sekai, an art magazine that was published in 1890s, and which attracted many well-known woodblock print artists. An important artist.
