Biography Awakawa, Kôichi 淡川 康一 (1902 - 1976)
When a very young man, Awakawa visited Nakahara Nantembo (1839-1925), the most well-known Zen painter of the 20th century, to ask for his advice. He remained deeply influenced by him the rest of his life. He did not take holy orders but worked as a professor of economics at Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto. His paintings are firmly based on the work of Gibon Sengai (1750-1837). Awakawa was the author of the first book on Zen painting in a western language.
