A very important Shijo painter; pupil and adopted son-in-law of Mori Tetsuzan (1775-1841), who in his turn was one of Maruyama Ôkyo's ten best pupils. Whereas Mori Tetsuzan brought the Shijo style to Edo (Tokyo), Mori Kansai taught Shijo school painting in Kyoto in the early Meiji period. Roberts, p. 69.
