Drawings by Shōun, Yamamoto

Yamamoto Shōun was born in today's Nankoku City, Kochi Prefecture, in 1870, and died in 1965, at the age of 96. His artistic career spans the Meiji, Taisho and Showa periods, his greatest activity being between 1890 and 1920. He is mainly known as an illustrator of magazines such as Fuzoku Gaho, but also as a woodblock artist of bijin-ga, portraits of beautiful women, of children and of landscapes. In the latter part of his career he was mainly active as a painter.
